Floreana scuttled
The "Floreana" was sunk in the afternoon of Apr 6 after refloating and cleaning of all pollution materials, outside the boundaries of Galapagos Marine Reserve. The US company T & T Marine Salvage was in charge of the removal operation, refloating had started on Apr 4 at 01.30 a.m. The ship was taken in tow by the tug §Province del Azuay" which was provided by the Ministry of Environment and the Secretariat of Ports and Maritime and River Transport. Staff of the Dirección Regional de los Espacios Acuáticos y Guardacostas Insular (DIRGIN) oversaw the operation. The guards who participated in the operation collected a few waste adrift when the ship foundered stern first. Floreana refloated and underway to scuttling site
The "Floreana" was successfully refloated alongside the barge "Tatita" off Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, the capital of San Cristóbal. and will be sunk outside the marine reserve on Apr 5. The Consejo de Gobierno said in a statement it expected the ship to be scuttled on Apr 5 outside the marine reserve archipelago in the Pacific 1,000 miles from the Ecuadorian coast in a Position 76 nautical miles from Puerto Baquerizo Moreno. The ship was carrying 1,400 tons of cargo, including food and hazardous substances as 10,000 gallons of fuel and 11 tons of vegetable oil, which did not pose a risk to the fragile ecosystem. The Operation was being monitored by the Dirección Regional de los Espacios Acuáticos y Guardacostas Insular (DIRGIN). Floreana readied for scuttling
66 days after having run aground the "Floreana" will be refloated and towed to a Position 76 nautical miles from Puerto Baquerizo Moreno to be scuttled on Arpr 5, when the sea conditions are favourable. Preparations for th erefloating manoeuvre started on Apr 4 at 01:30 a.m. by the T & T Marine Salvage. They planned to inject air into the engine room, while divers will be checking the hull. Despite the fact that the company intended to leave all 2oo tons cement on board the ship, for reasons of buoyancy it was required to less weight so that 60 tons were downloaded and brought to the Centro de Gestión de Residuos Sólidos in San Cristóbal. The barge "Tatita" will be needed a second time to pump out water as due to the heavy seas the ingress of water has increased.
