More trouble with troubled trawler

Fri May 19 22:30:23 CEST 2017 Timsen

On May 19 around 4 a.m. and 6 a.m. eight lifeguards from the SNSM intervened in the Loubet basin of Bouloogne to secure the trawler "«L’Île Maurice". The heavily damaged trawler suffered water ingress and had to be pumped out. The lifeboat "Jacques-Huret" towed the trawler to the old slipway No. 3 and isolated it from the other boats in the port. Given the fragility of the wreck, they first towed it, then dropped it and pulled it by hand. It was then surrounded it with an anti-pollution boom. A marine surveyor was also on hand to inspect the vessel. He strongly advised against strapping the boat to remove it at the risk of breaking it. It was moved onto a sloping concrete surface where it could be recovered without difficulty if it sank. The operation was barely completed around 5 a.m. when the rescue team had to call the fire brigade of Boulogne for a new intervention. The fire had again reignited on the trawler. Once more foam was sprayed to extinguish the fire. The operation had to be renewed in the morning. Monitoring rounds continued to be conducted.

Trawler still smouldering

Thu May 18 13:12:28 CEST 2017 Timsen

In the morning of May 18, smoke emerged again from the "L’Île Maurice". In the night of May 16, the trawler which was moored in the basin Loubet, in Boulogne-sur-Mer, was ravaged by a fire. Now the firefighters of Boulogne again extinguish it with foam. Since the fire, rounds were made every two hours to watch the ship. The priority was also to prevent the trawler from sinking. An investigation has been opened. It was still unclear when the trawler would be removed from the port. Trawler ablaze in Boulogne-sur-Mer

Wed May 17 11:33:28 CEST 2017 Timsen

For reasons still unknown, the "L’île Maurice - BL.663223”, 20 gt, which was moored in the Loubet basin, was ravaged by a fire which broke out on May 16, 2017, at 11.45 p.m. In the morning of May 17, firefighters were still on scene and tried to prevent the boat from sinking. When the fire rescue arrived, the trawler was full alight, apparently as a result of an explosion on board. Significant means were deployed to the site. 68 firefighters from the Boulogne, Marquise, Desvres Calais, Etaples and Marck-en-Calaisis brigades were mobilized, including specialists from the Ship Fire Unit. They could douse the flames by sprinkling the ship with foam and water. In a second stage, they worked to keep the boat afloat by pumping water out. Finally, they put in place a pollution dam at 1 a.m. to prevent the escape of hydrocarbons in the basin. The firefighters were assisted by a Dutch tug which had been in the vicinity. . It was still too early to determine whether the origin of the fire was accidental or criminal, an inquiry was being carried out by the maritime gendarmerie. Arson was suspected.
