Genco bulker detained in Jacksonville

Fri Nov 21 18:43:20 CET 2014 arnekiel

A handymax bulker controlled by Genco Shipping & Trading has landed on the US Coast Guard’s latest list of port detentions. The organisation says the 55,300-dwt Genco Provence (built 2004) was held in Jacksonville, Florida after the crew failed to perform a satisfactory fire drill.“The fire party neglected to follow the ship’s approved fire training manual for space entry and fire cooling boundaries,” officials added.“Subsequent fire drills failed to meet minimum standard of crew familiarization of essential shipboard procedures relating to safety of ships.” According to an entry found in the Equasis database the US Coast Guard inspected the same vessel in Savannah, Georgia a few weeks later. The ship wasn’t detained but it appears that it did receive a citation for an operational deficiency, which is unrelated to safety procedures. This suggests crewmembers had familiarized themselves with the ship’s fire-fighting manual and performed a satisfactory drill during the inspection. Undeclared weapons found at Navlakhi

Wed Dec 07 22:07:56 CET 2011 Timsen

On board the "Genco Provence" which was off Navlakhi port near Morbi then, customs officials on Dec 5, 2011, have recovered self-loading rifles and live cartridges after the ship had come from Indonesia carrying coal for Hindustan Zinc. The weapons were declared to the department earlier but those on the ship did not have papers for weapons and ammunition. The ship has 21 Ukraine nationals and two security guards of Irish nationality. Coastguard, Navy and police officials visited the Navlakhi port. They recovered four SLRs, which have been procured from the Sri Lankan Naval armory, from security guards on board. 392 live cartridges of foreign make have also been seized. The company sending the ship declared only 320 cartridges. Customs officials will write to the Sri Lankan authorities to verify the credentials of the vessel and claims of their crew members as they had traveled from a Lankan port. The crew members told they were carrying rifles to thwart any attack by pirates. But port clearance will only be given after the papers ascertaining the legality of the weapons are submitted.
