Master of detained ship died on board

Wed May 03 12:09:51 CEST 2017 Timsen

The master aboard the "Geo Star" which has been detained since Jan 31, 2017 in Agigea Port in Constantia after a port state control, has died on board due to a heart failure. A rescue team had tried for more than 45 minutes to resuscitate him in vain. The Ukrainian Yuriy Tsaruk was 62 years old. The ship had been found to have major deficiencies regarding the 2006 Geneva Maritime Labor Convention (MLC 2006). Since the ship was detained, the shipowners abandoned it, leaving the crew consisting of 12 men - 11 from Ukraine and one from Russia - on their own. They had not been paid salaries since December 2016, and water and food ran out. The ship's agent supplied the ship with water and food. At the request of the crew and with the approval of the International Transport Federation (ITF) in London on April 28, court action was launched to recover the seafarers' wages in accordance with international and national law. The ship's insurer in terms of MLC 2006 was a Russian company that has not fulfilled its obligations under the contract signed with the shipowners. The Romanian authorities, as well as the Embassy of Ukraine in Bucharest, were informed of the death of Tsaruk and will inform his family in Ismail.
