Firefighters investigating fire on cargo ship

Thu Dec 05 10:46:10 CET 2013 Timsen

On Dec 5, 2013, firefighters were investigating the causes of a blaze which was sparked by a digger on board the "Hanseatic Scout". All of the ship’s crew has been accounted for and there were no injuries reported. A total of 10 crews from across the county had been called to Bentink dock at Lynn Port on Dec 4 at 11.15 a.m. as the digger was unloading a cargo of wood chips from the ship. Most of the cargo had been unloaded or had not been loaded yet. Four teams of firefighters were sent into the open-topped hold to tackle the blaze, which did not spread from the digger onto the cargo. They used breathing apparatus and compressed air foam to tackle the blaze, while a rescue boat stood by. A swift water rescue team and aerial platform ladder were also on the scene along with ambulance crews, police and the Coastguard. The Environment Agency and West Norfolk Council’s Environmental Health team also attended as crews were using foam to put out the blaze. The fire took two hours to bring under control. The digger remained on board the ship but it was likely to be moved off later.
