Cargo ship sank in typhoon, crew saved

Thu Sep 18 11:32:51 CEST 2014 Timsen

The "Hao Jun" lost power and took in water in Chinese waters about 10 nm southwest of Macau in the morning of Sep 16, 2014. The vessel was caught in the typhoon Kalmaegi, which hit the area with winds up to 80 knots. When the vessel started to sink, the master requested an evacuation of the crew. A helicopter of the rescue service of Hong Kong was requested by Guangdong maritime rescue authorities from their Hong Kong Counterparts and managed to airlift to safety all 14 crew men. The operation took about one hour. The chopper crew had to deal with 10 m waves and 50 knot winds as they tried to pluck them off the ship. The crew was taken to Hong Kong. The Hong Kong Observatory had raised the No 8 signal, indicating a strong typhoon at 10. 30 p.m. as Typhoon Kalmaegi barrelled towards Guangdong and Hainan island, bringing with it gusts of up to 80 knots. The same morning just before 5 a.m., another helicopter was deployed to rescue the crew of 11 on board a barge that had run aground in the same area, but as the seas had calmed significantly by this time, they were able to be rescued by another vessel. The fate of the "Hao Jun" was unknown to date.
