Crabber suffered water ingress in Barents Sea

Fri Oct 04 21:10:32 CEST 2013 Timsen

On Oct 2, 2013, the Norwegian rescue Center received notification from the USA that it was picked up distress signals at 1.30 a.m. from the "Havnefjell" in the Barents Sea. The rescue Center made contact via Vardø Radio. It turned out that the ship with a crew of six had major problems. They took in water, and the pumps were unable to cope the flooding. The converted shrimper had large water tanks on board whiuch could not be pumped out due to mechanical trouble. The ship had sailed from Kjøllefjord seven days ago. The Coastguard vessel "Andenes" delivered pumps on board the vessel with which the situation was brought under control. An Orion aircraft of the 133 air wing was dispatched from Andøya to guide the "Andenes" and hold radio link to the ship for six hours. It was later escorted to Båtsfjord by the "Andenes" but got ahead only with slow speed. Later it was taken in tow because of mechanical problems and bad weather in the area. There was no danger of sinking for the ship, but the crew was very tired after several days awake. The ship was expected in port on Oct 5.
