Stormy sea prevents fuel salvage

Tue Jun 13 13:04:42 CEST 2017 Timsen

The administration in vain has been attempting to defuel the "Ibis" that has about 1.4 kilolitre diesel on board to prevent the fuel from leaking into the sea. The main concern was the 1,4 kilolitres of diesel. A special team was formed comprising officials from the concerned departments. The team has been trying to reach the vessel for the last four days, but the waves were too high and it was not safe for anyone to go on-board and start work. Experts from Mumbai and Singapore who offered assistance have stated that it was not feasible to go and defuel the vessel keeping in mind the present condition of the sea. A close watch was being kept on the vessel. The district administration had a plan in case there was a leakage and would be looking at how to mitigate it. The quantity of fuel was small but the process was arduous. In case there was a leak, there was a team being prepared to clear it. The vessel was about 600 meters from the shoreline. Experts from NMPT, coast guards and other teams were looking at different options to salvage the barge but it has not been possible because of the turbulent sea.

Sunken crane barge spilling oil

Wed Jun 07 20:28:28 CEST 2017 Timsen

The diesel tank of the "Ibis" broke lose and hit a boulder and exploded in the evening of June 6, causing a fuel spill. This has caused oil slick near the seashore at Mogaveerapatna, Ullal. As strong odour of diesel is in the air, it is suspected by the locals that fuel had begun to leak from the tank of the barge. The team of experts that was expected to arrive from Mumbai remained elusive. The team was expected to come on June 5 but it did not make it even the next day. It reached Suratkal that evening and visited the spot after holding discussions with district administration on Wednesday. The team of officials was accompanied by ADB officials. The DC had instructed the officials to draw out oil from the barge, but despite efforts by the Navy personnel and technical experts, it could not be done, apparently due to the rough sea and weather conditions.# Several spare parts of the barge reached the seashore since the morning of May 6. A tank with a tyre around it and a huge iron door reached the shore at Mogaveerapatna. During the last two days, about 60 percent of the barge became submerged. The wreck might inflict damage on the reef built out of investment running into crores of rupees. Report with photos: http://www.daijiworld.com/news/newsDisplay.aspx?newsID=455648

Sunken barge poses pollution threat

Tue Jun 06 10:26:24 CEST 2017 Timsen

After the sinking of the "Ibis" there was some concern that pollution will be released. Several items have broken free from the dredge including gas cylinders and other flotsam. Reports stated the "Ibis" had both fuel oil and diesel fuel on board. As the dredge was close to the shoreline there was a high risk of fouling beaches with pollution.
