39 islanders detained for looting attempts

Fri Mar 10 10:47:22 CET 2017 Timsen

39 people from the island of Punáwere were detained due to attempts to loot the 170 containers aboard the "Isla Bartolomé". The National Police and the Navy of Ecuador in a joint operation arrested the thefts, including four children, for the alleged offense of stealing of merchandise goods with six small boats. The attempts took place five days after the sinking on Feb 23. The looters took advantage of the fact that the vessel ran aground only six miles from Posorja. The prosecutor, Luis Machado, ordered the arrests of 29 adults and the children. Subsequently the adolescents, between 15 and 16 years, were delivered to their parents. Judge Teodoro Demera Valencia issued pretrial detention orders against the adults and ordered the commencement of a 30-day tax deed for property offenses. The Navy has established a safety zone of about one nautical mile around the wreck. On March 13, the salvage of the containers and the vesselwas due to start. First the containers on the main deck were to be removedwith a crane barge. Then the ship was to be pumped out in order to get it refloated and towed away. The Peruvian barge was due to arrive in Guayaquil on Mar 9. The "Alina", coming from Antigua and Barbuda, was also expected to arrive this day in order to supply the inhabitants of the Archipelago. It will provide services for 30 days, followd by the "Seatle de Holanda", which will be the replacement of '"Bartolomé Island" to meet the logistical and feeding needs of the islands.
