Collision on the Maas

Wed Jan 11 10:54:27 CET 2017 Timsen

The "Alto Mira", 1343 ts (EU-No.: 02321340), was in collision with the "Istoromi", 3143 ts (EU-No.: 02326769), on the Outer Maas between Poortugaal and Spijkenisse on Jan 11, 2017, around 4 a.m. Initially, the "Alto Mira" encountered steering problems. The skipper of the approaching "Istoromi" concluded that a collision was unavoidable. He decided to make sure that both ships would hit each other head-on. Then, the risk of an leakage iwas the smallest, so he navigated his ship directly towards the other. The "Istoromi" was loaded with acetone, the Alto Mira" was carrying ethanol. No one was injured and no pollution occurred. Both vessels were damaged just above the water line in the bow region. The patrol boat "RWS 73" was dispatched to the scene. After the accident, the tankers proceeded to the Geul Port in the Botlek with own power where the cargoes consisting of ethanol and acetone were to be pumped out of the tanks which had remained intact, arriving there at 5.30 a.m. The Seaport Police was on scene with the patrol boat "P 6" (IMO: 9333216) and started investigating the accident.
