Wreck to be pulled out of shipping channel
On Nov 18 works started to remove the "Wihan Sejahtera" from the shipping channel of West Surabaya. To lift the wreck completely, it may take one to two months. It was planned to shift the wrecks with four tugs.
No fatalities after ferry sinking
All 175 passengers survived the sinking of the "Wijhan Sejahtera" off the port of Surabaya. There were only 16 injuries among them when the ferry 175 literally flipped the Madura Strait, shortly after leaving port towards Maumere on Flores Island. The Indonesian authorities have opened an investigation to determine the causes of the accident.
Ferry capsized in Lamong Bay
The "Wihan Sejahtera" capsized and later sank in the Lamong Bay 15 minutes after having left the port of Surabaya on Nov 16, 2015, at 09.30 a.m., 200 meters from the Terminal Lamong Bay. The ship started getting water inside after getting imbalanced, and the master decided to return to the terminal, but did not make the way back. Witnesses had felt a jolt before vessel started to list to starboard, thought to be resulting from a collision which caused a leak and as a consequence cargo shift which may, however, also have been caused by overloading. Help was soon at hand, as the ship was only some hundred meters from the shore. Several fishing boats, patrol boats and tugs attended within short time. 175 passengers and 29 crew members were rescued, about 100 of them from the water, others were taken off from the port side of the hull. 25 were taken to the Tanjung Perak Hospital with fractures or bruises. According to some sources, 15 suffered life threatening injuries. The SAR operation was complicated by haze. The vessel was en route from Tanjung Perak to Bajo, East Nusa Tenggara. Besides the passengers it was carrying two motorcycles, seven cars, eight small trucks and 43 large trucks. The wreck was resting in a water depth of 16 meters with parts of the underwater hull still showing upturned above the water. As the number of people rescued exceeded the vessel's official count of 153 passengers and crew embarked, no definitive account of losses will be available until after divers have searched the wreck.
