Three people arrested for their alleged roles in sinking
Three people have been arrested for their alleged roles in the sinking of the KMP 'Yunicee' off the coast of Bali. Though initial reports suggested different numbers, authorities later said 77 people were on board the ferry. 51 people were rescued, but 11 people died and 15 others were declared missing. During a press conference, Yassin Kosasih from the National Police said the captain has already been detained in Banyuwangi. He did not perform his role to provide safety which resulted in loss of life and property. NW and RMS, branch head of the ferry company and an official from the Ketapang Port, respectively, have also been named as suspects. “Based on legal facts there is a strong suspicion that both suspects had a role in the sinking of KMP Yunicee,” Yassin said. The KMP 'Yunicee ' had been traveling at over-capacity. It should have only loaded about 35 tons of cargo, but ended up transporting nearly 230 tons.
Investigation results in sinking released
The Directorate of Water Police on Aug 9 has released the results of the investigation regarding the sinking of the 'Yunicee' on June 29. The Captain and two crew members have been detained for negligence as investigators found the vessel sank due to overloading. The three suspects were said not to have followed standard operating procedures which caused 11 deaths, while 15 people remain missing.
More victims recovered from the sea
More bodies have been recovered after they were found floating a week after the KMP 'Yunicee' sank. It was uncertain how many were missing. The National Transportation Safety Committee was still investigating the cause of the incident, but the inspectors suspected the engine failed before the vessel was dragged approximately 300 metres away from the Gilimanuk port by the strong current. Investigators were also trying to determine why the vessel did not issue a distress signal through the EPIRB. They also discovered that many of the passengers were unable to wear lifejackets.
