Disabled cargo ship towed to Reykjavik

Tue Dec 29 13:56:55 CET 2020 Timsen

On Dec 27, 2020 the 'Lagarfoss' lost its engine power about 230 nautical miles southwest of Garðskagi. It had sailed from Reykjavik, headed to Halifax, on Dec 25. The owner Eimskip contacted the Iceland Coast Guard around noon and asked if it was possible to deploy the patrol vessel 'Thor' to take the ship in tow after repairs on board had not been successful. The patrol ship left the port of Reykjavíkin the night of Dec 27 and arrived at the 'Lagarfoss' in the early morning of Dec 29. It managed to establish a towing connection and started pulling the vessel back to Reykjavík at 4 a.m. The weather was very good, the crew aboard the 'Lagarfoss' wass safe and the trip was going very well. The ship berthed at the Sundahoefn Container Terminal in Rykjavik on Dec 30 at 4 p.m. During inspections it turned out that the vessel's crankshaft has been damaged and needed to be replaced. The repairs will take some weeks but spare parts have already been bought and were being shipped to Iceland. Lagarfoss under tow to Reykjavik

Thu Jul 23 21:24:59 CEST 2015 Timsen

The Iceland flagged Coast Guard ship "Thor" (MMSI: 251473110) was towing the "Lagarfosson July 23 west of the island after the vessel broke down deep south of Iceland on July 22, and the "Thor" was sent to assist . Adverse weather conditions delayed the beginning of the operations but now they were going ahead as planned. The convoy reached the waters of Reykjavik on July 24 where the tugs "Jotunn" (IMO: 9518737) and "Pilot Leynir" (IMO: 9126388), took over the tow from the patrol boat, and the ships headed to the port of Reykjavik with around 4 knots at 10 a.m. LT. Eimskip announces malfunction in the steering gear of M/V LAGARFOSS

Thu Jul 23 08:36:09 CEST 2015 arnekiel

A malfunction occurred in the vessels steering gear on the vessel´s route to Reykjavik at the location abt 70 nautical miles south east of the Icelandic coast, Eimskip said in its press release. Weather conditions were favourable and no danger to crew, cargo or the vessel under the circumstances. A decison was made to sign a contract with the Icelandic Coast Guard to assist M/V LAGARFOSS to her destination Reykjavik under her own power. The Coast Guard vessel ÞOR is expected to meet M/V LAGARFOSS early morning 22nd July to assist. M/V LAGARFOSS eta Reykjavik is early morning on Thursday 23rd July. During a recent guarantee dry-docking of the vessel in Hamburg the manufacturer of the steering gear decided to replace parts in the gear, which was upon their own decision making and demand. It is highly likely that the malfunction is the responsiblity of the gear manufacturer and entirely their responsibility.
