Container ship under tow to Newark

Tue Jun 09 09:17:30 CEST 2020 Timsen

A serious crash in the turbocharger of the engine was found to have caused the minor explosion in the engine room of the 'Laura Maersk' which injured a crew member 442 kilometres southeast of Newark. The man was medevaced and meanwhile recovering. The ship was meanwhile being towed to New Jersey by American tug 'Atlantic Enterprise' (IMO: 7417240) which reached the casualty on June 8 at 2 p.m. The explosion was followed by a fire in the engine room, which was immediately extinguished. The ship has suffered no further damage, and the cargo was intact. The MAersk company has launched an investigation to find out why the turbocharger broke.

Containership disabled by explosion

Sat Jun 06 20:57:03 CEST 2020 Timsen

The US Coast Guard medevaced a man from the 'Laura Maersk', which had sailed from Algeciras to Newark on May 26, 2020, approximately 275 miles off the coast of Ocean City in the morning of June 5. Watchstanders at the Coast Guard’s Fifth District command center received a report on June 4 evening that an explosion occurred in the engine room of the vessel which burned a crewmember and disabled the ship. Aircrews aboard an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter and an HC-130 Hercules airplane from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City, North Carolina launched to medevac the injured crewmember. Due to the extensive distance, the Coast Guard Fifth District coordinated with U.S. Fleet Forces Command to have the helicopter land on the USS 'Mahan (DDG 72)' and refuel before conducting the medevac. Once on scene, the aircrew hoisted the man onto the helicopter and transported him to Norfolk Sentara General Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia. A plan was being developed to salvage the disabled vessel.
