Tankker hit by car carrier

Fri Feb 20 22:49:25 CET 2015 Timsen

Just after having left the port of Antwerp bound for Lome, the car carrier "Grance Africa" was in collision with the tank barge "Leonardo" on the Wester Scheldt on Feb 20, 2015, at 2.45 p.m. The "Leonardo" 2508 ts (EU-No.: 07001724), whilst coming from Terneuzen tried to pass the outgoing carrier from starboard and suffered signifiant damage at port side. Immediately tugs of Multraship and the Union of Rescue and Towing rushed to the scene but did not have to take action as the battered tanker was guided towards Antwerp. The ship was anchored near the North Sea Terminal in Doel. The "Grande Africa" suffered barely damage and was allowed to proceed to Flushing for investigations before continuing the journey. The "Leonardo", after undergoing inspections in the Zandvliet Lock in Antwerp, sailed to Rotterdam and berthed at Staart-East on the Merwede on Feb 21 at 11.15 p.m. Dutch reports with photo and video of collision: http://www.omroepzeeland.nl/nieuws/2015-02-20/817044/aanvaring-op-westerschelde#.VOepqcgwfIV http://www.schuttevaer.nl/nieuws/actueel/nid22195-aanvaring-op-westerschelde-video.html
