Sinking ferry run aground, all saved
The "Malaysia Express 1" started to sink on Dec 18, 2014, at 1.15 p.m. LT en route from Malacca Malaysia to Dumai Indonesia, Malacca Strait, with 171 passengers on board, due to water ingress in the aft section. All passengers were rescued by nearby fishing vessels and the police boat "Satpolair Bengkalis" at 6.20 p.m. They were taken to Dumai aboard the "Indomal 3". The vessel remained afloat in pos. 101.32.6' N 02.18.1 E. At 12:25 p.m. the "Malaysia Express 1" had sailed from Porck Dicson to Dumai. The ferry was grounded in shallows off Pulau Rupat, Kabupaten Bengkalis.
