Manistee saved lost diver

A scuba diver and a charter boat were rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard and the "Manistee" after the boat’s engine shut off on June 29, 2014 shortly after noon about 4.5 miles west of the Mackinac Bridge. Once the engine shut off, both the diver and the charter boat started drifting away from each other. The diver was unable to swim back to the boat because of the 10 to 15 knot winds. After receiving a call about the situation, the Coast Guard issued an urgent marine information broadcast to other boaters. The "Manistee" was only about a mile away when they received the call, turned around and retrieved the diver. The Coast Guard Station St. Ignace responded with a small boat to pull the charter boat to the Mackinaw City Marina. The diver was safely returned to the charter boat before it was pulled back to land.

Manistee beset by ice

The crew of Coast Guard Cutter "Biscayne Bay" aided "Manistee" while engaged in Operation Taconite, the Coast Guard's largest domestic ice-breaking operation, which began in December, early on Jan 28, 2012, morning in the Straits of Mackinac. The crew of the "Manistee" had contacted the Coast Guard Sault VTS at 5:18 a.m., reporting the ship had become beset by ice with 18 people aboard about 10 nautical miles west of the Mackinac Bridge. The ship was reportedly in ballast. For a time, the crew of "Manistee" was able to free the vessel, but could only operate at low speeds, due to the icy conditions. The crew of Biscayne Bay was on scene at 8:50 a.m. and was able to safely free the motor vessel and escort it through the Round Island Passage and into the open waters of Lake Huron.
