No risk of oil spill from neglected sunken ferry

Mon Jan 07 12:17:48 CET 2019 Timsen

An inspection carried out aboard the "María Rosario" by a multidisciplinary team ruled out leakages of fuel or lubricants that could contaminate the Bay of Pozuelos in Anzoátegui. The president of the company La Nueva Conferry, Admiral Edglis Herrera Balza, reported that during the inspection, the intentional removal of a stern-bottom valve from the port side was detected, which allowed the water to enter the vessel and caused it to submerge one meter below the waterline. Technical staff of Conferry, accompanied by officials of the Coast Guard, Bolipuertos and the Harbor Master (Inea), found that in the tanks with a capacity of 30 tons, only 4% of the fuel remained. The deposits were in perfect condition and there was no risk of leakage of hydrocarbons. He denounced that the diesel and oils of the "María Rosario", "Concepción Mariño", "Lilia Concepción" and "Rosa Eugenia" were stolen, but pointed out that they lacked systems, equipment and crew. The "Maria Rosario" remained secured to the dock at the starboard side by the three mooring lines. Next Conferry ship sank

Wed Jan 02 20:53:01 CET 2019 Timsen

The "María Rosario", which was moored at the Eulaila Buroz pier in Puerto La Cruz in the Bay of Pozuelos since 2017, began to sink on Dec 31, 2018. The neglected vessel sank with the stern, but remained tied to the dock with the bow. It had been in the process of being sold. She had suffered faults in the bilge pumps due to energy loss. The Ministry for Ecosocialism, (Minec) on Jan 2 activated a contingency plan to immediately address the sinking of the "María Rosario". Technicians tried to contain spilling fuel in the vicinity of the wreck and carried out inspections which showed that there were no oil barriers or other measures available for this purpose. It was the third sinking of Conferry ships in 2018 after the "Tallink Autoexpress 2" foundered on Aug 7 in Guanta, being raised 40 days later, and the "Rosa Eugenia" sinking by the bow on Sep 4 at the dock of the Buenos Aires terminal.
