14 crew members of distressed vessel rescued
The "Ming An", 3.500 dwt (IMO: 8787446), with 14 Indonesian crew members on board issued a distress signal on Oct 18, 017, at 01.38 a.m. The crew abandoned the sinking ship 36 miles west of Kaohsiung in the Taiwan Strait. The MRCC launched an SAR operation, and patrol boats of the Coastguard located life rafts in the sea, from which 13 castaways were picked up. One crew member initially was missing but was found alive and rescued by a fishing vessel. The ship seemed to have been disabled after an engine failure and capsized in adverse weather, having been turned broadside to battering waves.
