12 crew from sinking cargo ship rescued in stormy waters
HAITI (AP) — The United States Coast Guard has rescued 12 people who abandoned their 212-foot cargo ship that began taking on water north of Haiti. DOWNLOAD: Track the storm with the FREE WSOC weather app Coast Guard officials in Miami say the rescue took place Thursday evening as the area experienced heavy weather caused by Hurricane Joaquin. Officials say they received a message from the British coast guard about the Bolivian-flagged cargo ship Minouche. The message stated that the ship was listing and crew members were preparing to abandon it. SPECIAL SECTION: Hurricanes and Tropical Storms The Coast Guard diverted a cutter and launched a helicopter. A good Samaritan vessel also diverted to the ship's last known position. The good Samaritan ship located the crew members and the Coast Guard crew hoisted them into the helicopter and took them to Great Inagua, Bahamas. SAR operation for crew of sinking ship
In the evening of Oct 1, 2015, the Coast Guard 7th District Command Center watchstanders received a relay message from Her Majesty's Coast Guard after they received an Inmarsat satellite message stating tht the "Minouche" was was sinking 51 miles northwest of Haiti. The crew of 12 reported a 30 degrees list to portside and abandoned the ship into a life raft in stormy weather conditions with a heavy swell. The Coast Guard immediately diverted the Coast Guard Cutter Northland and launched a helicopter crew forward deployed in Great Inagua, Bahamas. A good Samaritan vessel and member of the Automated Mutual Assistance Vessel Rescue System, commonly referred to as AMVER, has also been diverted to the vessels last known position.
