Filipino crewman admits faking fall from cargo ship at Port of Mobile

Sat Dec 29 10:53:20 CET 2012 arnekiel

A Filipino man who jumped off of the cargo ship he was working on earlier this year pleaded guilty today to faking the entire incident and prompting a costly search-and-rescue operation. At a hastily arranged hearing in front of Chief U.S. District Judge William Steele, Dexter Emphasis Desquitado pleaded guilty to communicating a false distress message. With the guilty plea, Steele will not have to decide whether the defendant knowingly waived his rights when he spoke to investigators. The defense had sought to get the statement thrown out on grounds that the defendant’s limited English made it impossible for him to understand his right to remain silent. http://blog.al.com/live/2012/12/filipino_crewman_admits_faking.html
