Record penalty against Princess Cruise Lines
The pwners of the "Caribbean Princess", the Princess Cruise Lines were fined with 40 million Dollars for violations of environmental regulations, the highest penalty ever imposed in the US for willful pollution of ships. They were not solely the result of the misconduct of some on a particular ship but rather the bad culture and the bad management of Princess Cruise Lines, the US Department of Justice said on Dec 1, 2016.
The investigation against the cruise company was launched after an engineer of the "Caribbean Princess" in August 2013 had revealed to the authorities the existence of a "magic pipeline", which illegally led oil remains into the sea. According to the investigation, this illegal practice began already in the year 2005.
