Tanker assisted blazing motor yacht

Wed Aug 09 13:08:58 CEST 2017 Timsen

On Aug 4, 2017, the "Navigator Grace" diverted to the motor yacht "Soul" which had caught fire 40 miles south of Marseille. At 1.45 p.m. the CROSS Med Areceived a call from the control tower at the Marignane Airport, which reported that an aircraft had sighted the blazing boat, with two men nearby in a liferaft. The CROSS Med then launched a call for assistance to nearby ships. At the same time, a Panther helicopter of the National Navy Flotilla 36F based in Hyères was dispatched to the scene. After it arrived at 2.40 p.m., it hoisted the two men, who were of Spanish nationality, aged 58 and 66 years. They were brought back to Hyères at 3.45 p.m. The cause of the fire could not be determined. French report with photo: https://www.premar-mediterranee.gouv.fr/communiques-presse/assistance-deux-naufrages-large-marseille.html At sea, the unique number to reach the emergency is 196 from any telephone, or Channel 16 of the VHF.
