Ferry suffered engine trouble

Sat Jul 15 20:46:35 CEST 2017 Timsen

The "BNorcon Galatea" was taken out of service in Long Pond on July 14, 2017, due to engine trouble, dropping the Fogo Island-Change Islands service down to one ship. It was not yet known how long repairs will take, but the ferry route was currently operating on a load-and-go basis. The Department of Transportation was telling travellers to expect delays, as the route was operating with only the ferry "Legionnaire". The "Norcon Galatea" could be back in by the weekend.

Ferry towed to safety

Thu Mar 02 12:04:09 CET 2017 Timsen

The tug "Atlantic Larch" towed the "Norcon Galatea" into the dock in Breton on Mar 2. The ferry will be inspected, refueled, and returned to service for the provincial government. The pship was on its way from Clarenville to the southwest coast when it ran out of fuel near Brunette Island in the morning of Feb 26. The captain requested that he and four crewmembers on board be airlifted to safety after attempts to get fuel to the vessel failed in rough seas. Before the crew was taken off, the ship has been anchored off the south coast. In the morning of Mar 1 the Burry’s Shipyard Emergency Response Team and crew were put onboard the ferry, then engaged a proper tow line from the tug with the ERT releasing the vessel from its mooring without incident.

Ferry recovery going on

Wed Mar 01 11:47:56 CET 2017 Timsen

The "Norcon Galatea" was expected back in port late on Feb 28 following two unmanned days off Brunette Island in Fortune Bay. On that day a commercial tug was dispatched to the Norcon Marine Services vessel and once conditions allowed, the crew would be transferred onto the ferry. A sister ship, the "Norcon Triton", was also standing by. The company said in a release that the vessel would return to service following an inspection and investigation into the incident.
