pirates on-board the cargo m/v "Izumi" they had hijacked on Oct 10, in the morning of Nov 7 opened fire with small arms against the Spanish frigate "Infanta Cristina" as it accompanied the aid ship "Petra 1" destined for Mogadishu. The "Infanta Christina" fired back after speeding up into a protective position between the pirates and the "Petra 1". The pirates then fled. As the attack was carried out by a pirated merchant vessel with 20 hostages on-board, the fregate had to defend herself and her escort with only minimal force in order not to endanger the lives of the hostages. The Spanish warship was escorting the "Petra 1", contracted by the African Union peacekeeping mission in Somalia to deliver food to Mogadishu. The same pirates are believed to have tried to hijack another merchant ship in the area earlier the same day, but were repelled when it took evasive action.
