Nine crew members released

Fri Jun 02 11:51:01 CEST 2023 Timsen

Nine crew members of the 'Maya 1', who were detained in Libya in January 2023, after their ship faced technical issues near Libya's Janzour area, have been released almost five months after their detention due to the efforts of Tabassum Mansoor and Ambassador Ngulkham Jathom Gangte. The ship was raided by a local armed group called Az Zawiya, based near Al Maya Port in Zawia city. The group eventually took the sailors’ crew into custody.

Probe into suspicious tanker

Thu Jan 20 11:47:39 CET 2022 Timsen

An international oil trafficking ring was believed to be hiding behind the case of the 'Eirini 1', which, although banned from sailing from the port of Rhodes island on Dec 8, 2021, escaped to Turkey. A control report prepared by customs authorities showed strong indications that the ship, before sailing to Rhodes, had loaded oil at the port of Zuwarah. It was estimated to have approached the Libyan coast between Nov 22 and 24 during which time the ship had deactivated its AIS. The investigation into the shipowner and leasing company of the ship led to a businessman based in Lasithi, who is active, among others, in the wholesale fuel trade. The tanker sailed to Rhodes on Nov 30, ostensibly to procure spare parts. However, an inspection revealed that all eight cargo tanks contained more oil than the allowed limit. The shipping documents presented to the customs inspectors by the captain showed that the oil was loaded near Palma de Mallorca by the 'Anuket Sapphire', which, however, never approached the area of Gibraltar as it operates exclusively in Latin America.
