Salvage operations hampered by stormy weather

Wed Feb 15 11:46:28 CET 2017 Timsen

Salvage operations of the "Sagan" have been hampered by rough weather, while oil continued to flow from the damaged hull at the grounding site on Suwanosejima island in the East China Sea. The ship was en route from Taiwan to Japan with a cargo of fuel when it was swept on to rocks in the Nakanoshima Channel by strong winds and heavy seas. The cargo tanks were breached and fuel began leaking. The crew of 18 was airlifted by Japanese Coast Guard helicopter. Meanwhile the oil leak was growing around the tanker, which was operated by Ocean Grow International Shipmanagement. Japanese authorities were monitoring the wreck and oil leak and commenced an investigation into the cause of the accident.

Oil leaked after product tanker Sagan stuck at rocks of Suwanosejima island in Japan

Sun Feb 12 22:39:54 CET 2017 arnekiel

The product tanker Sagan ran aground in East China Sea on the western coast of Suwanosejima island in rough weather. The vessel was carrying fuel from Taiwan to Japan, but during passage of Nakanoshima Channel the strong winds and heavy seas caused drifting outside the fairway and grounding into the rocky shallow of western Japanese waters. The vessel hardly stuck the rocks, suffering breaches of the cargo tanks and water ingress. The accident was reported to the local authorities and was requested immediate evacuation of the 18 crew because of the danger from capsizing. All the seamen on board of the product tanker Sagan were airlifted by Coast Guard helicopter and transported to the shore, as some of them had injuries. The oil leaked from the troubled vessel, but rough sea and bad weather make the salvage operations complicated and dangerous. The local authorities are monitoring the ship’s wreck and oil spot very carefully. According to preliminary information, the leak is growing and strong winds and current worsen the situation. The investigation for the root cause of the accident is under way.
