Ship dragged anchor chain along the Kiel Canal

Mon Jan 02 17:54:41 CET 2012 Timsen

Enroute Szczecin-Bizerte the "South River" pulled up another anchor when waiting for another ship to pass in the Kiel Canal and dragged it together with the whole anchor chain along the canal bottom in the night of Jan 2, 2012. The ship had to moor at the navy pilings in Brunsbüttel-Ostermoor at 3 a.m. to get rid of the anchor. The company Schramm from Brunsbüttel was called and removed the anchor with the help of a barge and tug within 12 hours. At 1.15 p.m. the ship was able to sail again and berthed in the Brunsbuttel locks half an hour later to continue its westbound voyage.

The Quebec City Police arrested four persons onboard the "Southern River" on May 6, 2011, after a routine verification of the border patrol. Two men who were working onboard the vessel were suspected of drug trafficing. One man was arrested for obstruction of justice when he tried to interfere with police operations and another man was wanted for non-respect. The men were all from Montreal and not part of the crew of the ship but rather part of a specialized firm for industrial cleaning.
