Tanker suffered engine trouble off Basilan island, crew safe

THE 22 crew members of the tanker which suffered engine trouble off Basilan island Friday night are safe, the Philippine Coast Guard said yesterday. Reports reaching Coast Guard commandant Admiral Ramon C. Liwag said that the PCG ship BRP Romblon was deployed yesterday morning to aid the distressed vessel, MT Sunrise Sampaguita, which was floating 15 nautical miles off Matanal Point, Basilan island. The tanker was reported by the Coast Guard Action Center in Manila,to be dead on water at about 8:31 p.m. Friday. Liwag immediately directed Coast Guard District South Western Mindanao to provide necessary assistance. The tanker departed Batangas bound for Davao via Dumaguete City last June 28 at about 2.12 pm. The MT Sunrise Sampaguita’s engine malfunctioned stranding it at around 8 p.m.
