Language barrier hampered help for fallen passenger

Thu Jun 21 10:32:40 CEST 2012 Timsen

The Coast Guard medevaced a 60-year-old man off the "Svendborg" approximately 30 miles east of Morehead City, North Carolina, on June 18, 2012. A member with the Ship Arrival Notification System called Coast Guard Sector North Carolina watchstanders at approximately 6:15 p.m. reporting that a passenger aboard the "Svendborg" had fallen and suffered head trauma. Crews aboard an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City in Elizabeth City, N.C. and a 47-foot Motor Life Boat from Coast Guard Station Fort Macon in Fort Macon, N.C., launched to assist. Two crewmembers aboard the MLB boarded the "Svendborg" and a rescue swimmer from the Jayhawk was lowered to assist the injured man. The hoist proved to be more difficult than a typical one. Adding to the common difficulties and dangers of an evolution such as this, there was a language barrier making it tough to learn anything about the patient. The man was hoisted from the "Svendborg" to the Jayhawk and transported to Carteret General Hospital in Morehead City.
