Wed May 03 20:56:06 CEST 2017 Timsen

Gibraltar’s Coroner will open an inquest into the deaths of two crew members of the "Tamar" who died following an explosion on board of the cargo ship which sailing to Gibraltar. The bodies of the Filipino seafarers were disembarked on May 3, with post-mortem examinations expected to be carried out later this week. Police was continuing to conduct interviews and investigations on behalf of the Coroner. The flag state of the vessel, Marshall Islands, has already conducted an investigation into the incident and concluded that it was an accident. The ship suffered an explosion in international waters in the Atlantic route from Baltimore to Gibraltar, where it arrived in the evening of May 1. A further two crewmembers who had sustained serious injuries in the explosion were airlifted by Portuguese maritime rescue services near the Azores. They were now being treated in Lisbon. The explosion took place at the fore castle of the vessel and was apparently caused by an accumulation of gases.

Two injured crew memberrs medevaced

Wed Apr 26 20:25:50 CEST 2017 Timsen

The two surviving crewmembers of the "Tamar" explosion were medevaced at approximately 4:30 a.m. on Apr 27 by a Portuguese Coast Guard aircrew along with three New York Air National Guard 106th Rescue Wing pararescuers to continue medical care. The aircrew arrived in Terceira Island at about 7 a.m. A Portuguese Air Force jet was scheduled to be waiting along with a medical team to bring the injured to Lisbon, Portugal for medical treatment. The Coast Guard reached out to their partner agencies to coordinate the emergency response. The New York Air National Guard’s 106th Rescue Wing launched an HC-130 aircrew with six pararescuers and one combat rescue officer. At approximately 7:45 p.m. on Apr 24 the captain of the Tamar reported another crewmember had died from the explosion. The New York Air National Guard’s 106th Rescue Wing pararescuers arrived on board the "Tamar" at about 9:30 p.m., after deploying from their HC-130 with two small boats and advanced life-saving equipment. They were staying with the ship until higher medical authority can take over care of the injured crew. The ship had a port check shortly before the accident found fault related to fire safety. An inspection on March 15 in Spain found a total of six errors, two of which were related to fire safety and propulsion, especially in relation to the ship's auxiliary machinery.
