Yacht repaired ahead of schedule
The rebuilindg of the "Vestas Wind" at Perisco’s yard in Bergamo to be on the start line of Leg 8 departure on June 7 from Lisbon to Lorient has turned the wreck to a fully-compliant, one-design, race boat for the world’s leading offshore race within four months.on May 22 it was loaded onto a truck to Lisbonone day ahead of schedule to get a faster shipping time, which might actually mean one or two extra days out on the water before the start in Lisbon. The "Vestas Wind" now is effectively a new boat. There were some old bits from the previous boat The team plan to transport the boat by ship and truck to Lisbon by midweek in time to reunite with the rest of the fleet. On May 26 the truck with the yacht moved aboard the "Gran Bretagna" (IMO: 9143702) at Setubal. Vestawind rebuilt at Persico Marine
The "Vestaswind" team is rebuilding the boat at Persico Marine and planning for a return to the race in Lisbon in June. A lot has happened since getting the boat there six weeks ago. they now have a new hull that had its final cook on Feb 25, and the team at the yard was busy with fitting of the internal structure which will continue for the next two weeks. Some of the structural components were brand new and have been built in the background by all corners of the VOR consortium. Others were extracted in a careful enough manner after the grounding that they were more than good enough to go back into the boat. This was all happening in parallel with the repair work required to the aft section of deck. They received the new aft section of the cockpit late last week from Multiplast and now have it positioned on the jig with the rest of the original deck, being correctly positioned and aligned to be signed off by Race Management. The team members Tony Rae, Tom Johnson and Nicolai Sehested will be returning to Persico next week, as the container of gearsalvaged from the wreckage has now arrived from Mauritius, with all the safety gear, sails, deck gear and VOR-supplied equipment.
