Grounded tanker looted
The "Virginia G" grounded at the Ics Mbao beach on Aug 30, 2015, in heavy swells. The tanker had been moored behind Goree Island, waiting to negotiate repair services of the Dakarnave Company and was driven onto the Mbattal beach in stormy weather. After people started looting the ship, the consignee of the ship, Alassane Mané, informed the police which sent the Legion of Gendarmerie, the arrival of which created panic among the looters, some jumped into the sea to escape. Ahuge crowd gathered around the ship. Six looters were arrested and were taken to the brigade of the French industrial free zone. To increase security around the ship, Alassane Mané recruited a resident to guard equipment consisting of mattresses, diving equipment, a computer, life jackets, etc. He expanded his team by recruiting five other young men. The next Alassane Mané found that looting had continued and material such as mattresses, a chart and a computer had been stolen. The monitoring team stated it had being attacked by an armed gang, but the police did not believe them and took them in custody for theft and criminal conspiracy. In total, 11 alleged thieves were held by the police in Thiaroye sur mer.
