AIS Devices

vesseltracker.com is offering you the possibility to receive the AIS signals in your home region and display them using our system. Become vesseltracker.com cooperation partner with our installation kit.

AIS means Automatic Identification System and has been introduced by the IMO (International Maritime Organization) to reduce the dangers of navigation. Using this system all accordingly equipped vessels are continuously exchanging their current navigational information such as position, course or velocity via two VHF channels (channel 87B and channel 88B). Additionally an increasing number of navigation marks and shore-based radio stations are equipped with AIS. In commercial seafaring the system has already become mandatory according to SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea).

AIS is mandatory for all vessel with a registered tonnage of at least 300 RT on international voyages and with at least 500 RT on national voyages.

AIS-devices are divided into two classes. The "Class A"-devices are used in commercial seafaring. The transponder is adapting its broadcast repetition frequency constantly to speed, manoeuvre-situation and the broadcasts of surrounding vessels. "Class B" devices can be used by leisure crafts. This class is using empty timeframes of "Class A" devices to broadcast and has longer intervals between broadcasts.

AIS-devices are broadcasting specific data or each vessel which can be analysed and evaluated by any AIS-receiver in its range. These informations include static data (e.g. Name, IMO-Number, Callsign, Length, Beam), dynamic data (e.g. Navigational Status, Course over ground, Speed) and voyage data (e.g. freight, destination, estimated time of arrival).

vesseltracker.com has tested the best AIS-Transponders and -Receivers on the market for you.
