Lying at the hub of many shipping lanes joining the West, the Middle East, Far East as well as Africa and Australia, Colombo has been recognised world over as the hub port in the South Asia. Colombo Dockyard PLC (CDPLC) is the island's leading Ship repair, Shipbuilding and Heavy Engineering facility, conveniently located inside the very Port of Colombo.
CDPLC operates 04 graving dry-docks with a maximum capacity of 125,000 Dwt and extensive repair berth facilities. Established in 1974, this state of the art engineering entity has been servicing a wide spectrum of international clients in the Ship Repair, Shipbuilding, Heavy Engineering and Offshore Engineering sectors.
In the ship repair sector on average, CDPLC handles over 200 vessels annually with 100 accommodated in drydock and the balance accommodated at alongside repair berth.
Since the year 1993 CDPLC has been operating in joint collaboration with Onomichi Dockyard Company Limited, Japan.
AN INTEGRATED MANAGEMENT APPROACH
CDPLC has been moving from a local player to a truly global player under the dynamic leadership of Chief Executive Officer & Managing Director Mr. Mangala P. B Yapa and the visionary guidance of Chairman Mr. Akihiko Nakauchi.
The company has been successful in developing and implementing an Integrated Management System that has ensured sustainable growth and satisfied customers. Areas such as Safety and Occupational Health, Environment, Development of Managerial and Technical skills are being systematised without jeopardising the flexibility in operation.
The implementation of efficient systems, time tested both locally and by the Japanese counterparts in Onomichi Dockyard has made it possible for CDPLC to achieve a remarkable increase in the ship repair and ship building sector within a relatively short span of time.
The shipyard’s quality system is accredited to ISO 9001:2008 by Lloyds Register Quality Assurance, UK for ship repairs, shipbuilding and offshore engineering. The safety is utmost priority, the “safety first” thinking has been inculcated to all yards practices with the full blessings of the top management.
The yard management has invested in a customised state of the art IT system to improve and streamline the operational systems currently adopted by CDPLC, with the final objective of achieving total connectivity and control.
SHIPBUILDING SECTOR GEARED TO MEET THE MARKET DEMAND
The Newbuilding's operation has also been revitalised and streamlined to win many international tenders for the design and construction of steel and aluminium hulled vessels. CDPLC has been successful in breaking into the Middle Eastern and the Indian markets in the recent past.
CDPLC is currently building four large size ocean going Multi-purpose Platform Supply Vessels (MPSV) for Greatship (India) Limited (02) & Greatship Global offshore Services Pvt. Ltd., Singapore (02), a wholly owned subsidiary of one of India’s largest private sector shipping companies, the Great Eastern Shipping Company. The first three MPSV has been successfully delivered and the fourth to be delivered by early March. This is followed by another order for two more MPSV’s from Greatship. Along with an order for 130 Ton Bollard Pull Anchor Handling Tug Supply Vessels for an Singapore client.
To facilitate to this growing market demand, CDPLC has converted one of its repair docks, Dock No. 02 to a fully equipped shipbuilding dock. During the year 2005-6 significant capital investment was pumped in to the Dock entrance widening project, which has increased the size of vessels that can be handled (specially for Ship building) by CDPLC. Along with this capacity increase the related facilities have been enhanced, such as the addition of new 50 ton crane to service the Dock No. 2 and the enhanced / upgrading of steel processing capacity of the yard, places the yard on a better footing to meet the demands of the international market.
ESTABLISHES ITS PROWESS IN THE OFFSHORE SECTOR
CDPLC has set high standards to meet with the diverse and complex needs in this new sector focusing on oil rigs, drill ships & LPG carriers. Colombo has managed to establish itself as a repair canter for Offshore Support Vessels operating in the region.
Many reputed names such as Tidewater-USA, Bourbon Offshore- France, Sanko Line-Japan, SBS Marine-UK,ONGC-India, Great offshore-India and Greatship-India have placed confidence in Colombo for their repair requirements.
