One tug disabled, another connected, ship underway again

Sat Dec 07 11:34:16 CET 2013 Timsen

In the evening of Dec 6 the tug "Ginger" was able to establish a towing connection with the "Burak Bayraktar" got the wire into ist propeller so that it broke. The tug had to return to Den Helder for repairs. On Dec 7 at 10.15 a.m. the tug "Zeus" was near the cargo ship and reported that the anchors were keeping it on position. It managed to establish a towing connection and started to pull the vessel towards deeper water. At 1.30 p.m. the "Zeus" and "Hunter" were escorting the vessel to the fairway, before it proceeded further towards Bremen unassisted. Both tugs returned to their stations.

Container vessel in difficulties off Vlieland

Fri Dec 06 17:07:23 CET 2013 Timsen

On Dec 6, 2013, the "Burak Bayraktar" reported the Dutch Coast Guard just after midnight that it was in difficulties due to a power loss and propulsion problems. One hour later the ship with a crew of 17 on board was forced to anchor five miles west of Vlieland. It was en route from Rotterdam to Bremen with a cargo of containers. The Coastguard sent the tug "Ievoli Amaranth" which arrived at 2:45 a.m. At 06.10 a.m. the "Burak Bayraktar" reported that the anchor was dragging, it was drifting towards the Eierlandsche ground, and the master requested the help of the "Ievoli Amaranth" which in vain tried to establish a towing connection. Also the attempt of the tug "Hunter" which proceeded from Terschelling to assist failed. The dragging anchor passed while drifting a gas pipeline in the seabed. In the early afternoon the "Burak Bayraktar" remained in a so far stable position on approximately 4.7 miles west of the lighthouse Eierland - Texel. The "Ievoly Amaranth" returned to Den Helder and was replaced by the "Ginger" from IJmuiden, while the "Hunter" remained on standby. As soon as conditions permit, a towing connection was to be established to take the ship to port. The ship can not continue to Bremen with own power. It had on board a variety of cargo in containers, also hazardous substances like inflammable products were included.
