Pleasure boater missing after collision on the Elbe

Fri Nov 04 09:36:57 CET 2016 Timsen

In the evening of Nov 3, 2016, around 6 p.m. the "Elbe 1" 75 ts (EU-No.: 32106534), pushing two container barges, was in collision with the 10-m-pleasure boat "Karo" on the Elbe near the Gauert main dike at Ochsenwerder. The pleasure boat was destroyed and sank immediately. The skipper, was saved by the crew of the "Elbe 1" and later hospitalized. Another 55 year old man who was below deck at the time of the accident was missing. 13 boats of the fire brigades in Hamburg and Lower Saxonia were alerted as well as a helicopter of the federal police and a diver team from Buchholz. 130 rescue forces of police and fire brigade were on site solely from Hamburg, joined by five volunteer fire rescue teams from Lower Saxonia and members of the German Life Saving Society (DLRG) being equipped with sonar, on the whole 260 forces. The search area was expanded on a length of four kilometers. The temperature of the river was nine degrees C. At 9.15 p.m. the search was supsended as there was no chance to find the man alive. The cause of the accident was still unclear, possible the barge convoy got into the wrong shipping lane. At the time of the collision it was perpendicular to the river and threatened to run aground. It was escorted to Oortkaten by a boat of the water police. The "Karo" was raised by a sheerleg on Nov 4.
