Lifeboat broke down during medevac

Mon Jun 12 12:28:13 CEST 2023 Timsen

An injured sailor was to be medevaced from the 'UAL Fortitude', en route from Rotterdam to Pointe Noire, in the English Channel in the afternoon of June 11, 2023, by the Bembridge RNLI, when the lifeboat suffered a mechanical breakdown. The Solent Coastguard had requested the launch of thelifeboat from Bembridge at around 3:30 p.m. It took around 30 minutes for the lifeboat to reach the 'UAL Fortitude', where the casualty was treated after suffering an amputation of a finger and transferred onto the lifeboat. The lifeboat then suddenly suffered a mechanical breakdown and lost one of its engines. Instead of going to Portsmouth, the decision was taken to head for the boathouse at Lane End, where the lifeboat was successfully rehoused and the casualty was initially to be transferred to an awaiting ambulance, with assistance from the Bembridge Coastguard Rescue Team. With the engine issue quickly resolved, the lifeboat relaunched at 7 p.m. to transfer the injured to the Southampton Docks for onward conveyance to Southampton General Hospital. Two paramedics who accompanied the victim have been returned to the Island at Trinity Landing, Cowes.
