One fisherman dead after ship capsized
On July 7, 2015, short before 8 a.m. the „Jón Hákon – BA 60“, 27 gt, capsized in the Aðalvík Bight in the Hornstrandir region. One crew member, Magnus Kristján Björnsson, 61, from Bíldudal, died, three others were rescued by a another fishing vessel about one hour after the "Jón Hákon" disappeared from the screens. The crew was about to pull in the fishing gear when the ship capsized. Short time later the Icelandic Coast Guard requested ships and boats in the area to look out for the vessel. First on scene was the f/v "Mardísi - IS 400" from Súðavík at 8.30 a.m., who managed to pluck the distressed fishermen from the keel of their ship, which was drifting bottom up, and took them to Bolungarvíkur where they transferred aboard the "Sædís - IS-067" which transported them to hospital in Ísafjörður. They were uninjured, but hypothermic. They reported that the ship went down so fast that they did not have time to put on neither survival suits nor life vests. Björnsson could only be recovered dead from the water. The "Fagranesið IS-008" was monitoring the capsized wreck until it went down around 9 a.m. before SAR rescue teams had reached the site. Weather on scene was rather calm at the time of the accident. The West Fjord police launched an investigation.
