Nuclear icebreaker Rossiya has entered the Baltic Sea. According to the tracking satellite system, the icebreaker was on Jan., 21, 2013 morning going not far from the Danish island Rønne with the speed of some 13 knots and is bound for St. Petersburg. The icebreaker was chartered for 90 days by Rosmorport for icebreaking assistance in the Gulf of Finland.

The nuclear-powered icebreaker "Rossiya" will soon depart from Murmansk to pick up scientists and equipment from a drifting research station in the Arctic and find a suitable ice floe for the next station, Barents Observer reported. The floating research station “North Pole 39” has been drifting eastwards from the Wrangel Island area since October 2011, and is now about to be replaced.

Icebreaker "Rossiya" to replace "50 Let Pobedy" in Gulf of Finland

The nuclear-powered icebreaker “Rossiya” is expected to set sail from the Port of Murmansk to the Gulf of Finland on March 1, 2012. The vessel will replace another nuclear-powered icebreaker "50 Years of Victory," the FSUE Atomflot said. The nuclear-powered icebreakers owner Atomflot added that the icebreaker arrival in the Gulf is expected on 7 March 2012. The 50 Years of Victory was chartered by Rosmorport for 100 days to beef up a fleet of 14 diesel-electric icebreakers (owned by Rosmorport) and to ensure smooth shipping during this winter season in the region. The icebreakers escort convoys of tankers sailing to/from the port of Primorsk.
