Former ferry Trelleborg completed first voyage as Iranian cruise ship
Iran’s first cruise ship since the 1979 revolution, the "Sunny" completed its maiden revenue-earning voyage on Apr 13, 2017, docking in the Gulf resort island of Qeshm. The former ferry "Trelleborg" carried more than 200 passengers on the 127-km voyage from Kish, Iran’s other main resort island. The ship may carry up to 1,600 passengers and 200 vehicles between the two islands on 4- to 7-day cruises. However, Iran cannot compete with other Gulf destinations like Dubai, due to Islamic restrictions such as bans on alcohol and dancing. Since the lifting of international sanctions under a 2015 nuclear deal with world powers, the moderate government of President Hassan Rouhani has made tourism a priority for rebuilding Iran’s economy. Former Trelleborg to start service in Iran
The former "Trelleborg", now renamed "Sunny" and Palau-flagged, has just completed a drydocking and refit at the Neorion Syros Shipyards. the work included repainting in the colours of new Iranian operator Karaneh Lines. The ferry was now owned by MH Marine and managed by Piraeus-based Go Shipping & Management Inc. The latter also brokered the sale of the vessel. It arrived in Piraeus from Sweden in April 2016 but only docked in Syros during the second half of January 2017. The vessel was expected to operate from the port of Khorramshahr in the state of Khuzestan, in southwest Iran on the Iraqi border. It was not yet known whether she will operate international voyages or a service to other Iranian ports further down the Arabian Gulf. Report with photo: http://www.go-shipping.net/en/news
