Longliner seized for unauthorized fishing

Wed Feb 21 11:35:46 CET 2018 Timsen

The "Home Sheen" was seized on Feb 14. 2018, in unauthorized fishing action in the French EEZ of Juan-de-Nova by the patrol boat "La Malin" of the Armed Forces of the South Indian Ocean Zone. A team boarded the offending vessel and immediately had the fishing tackle lifted. The inspection of the vessel revealed the presence of about 60 tonnes of fish consisting mainly of tuna. The fishing product and the fishing gear on board were confiscated. The vessel was then diverted to the port of Longoni (Mayotte) where it arrived on Feb 16. The seizure of the vessel was decided after consultation with the Saint-Denis public prosecutor's office. The judge fixed a safety deposit of 30.000 Euros allowing the lifting of the seizure. The "Home Sheen" had fished in the Mozambique Channel before entering Juan de Nova's French EEZ.
