Woman jumps from Staten Island Ferry
A woman threw herself overboard the Staten Island ferry into the East River as it was docking in Manhattan on Sunday, officials said. The 48-year-old woman was spotted in the water a few feet away from the ferry as it was pulling into Whitehall Terminal around 12:10 p.m., authorities said. A Coast Guard escort boat—which commonly rides alongside the ferry—was able to quickly throw the woman a board to latch onto and pulled her out of the water, a spokesman for the Coast Guard said.“At the time they spotted the woman in the water she was just a short distance from the ferry, it was just a few feet, but as the ferry turned to line up to go straight in it the distance was increasing,” said the spokesman. The woman was taken to Battery Park where EMS rushed her to Bellevue Hospital.Prior to her jump the woman had made statements that she was trying to commit suicide, sources said. The woman was not in the water very long and showed no visible signs of injury, officials said. Source : NY times
