Nila patched and dewatered

Wed Oct 17 12:38:24 CEST 2018 Timsen

Specialists of the Azov-Black Sea branch of the Maritime Rescue Service FGBU completed emergency rescue operations on the "Nila" which had suffered water ingress in the ballast tanks on Oct 9 near the port of Kavkaz, being loaded with 4.000 tons of coal. The “Morspasluzhby” was sent to the vessel, along with the launch “Alexander Sizontsev” and the tug “Mercury” with dewatering equipment on board. On scene the forces of the Azov-Black Sea branch of the Federal Service for Marine Safety Service received a message from the border service about the prohibition of work in connection with the closed border on the m/v “Nila”. Rescuers were given the opportunity to rent a crew consisting of 11 people. The captain of the "Nila" refused to leave the ship. The “Morspasluzhby” kept monitoring the vessel in a distance of three cables. After the deterioration of weather, seven crew members left the “Nila”. On Oct 10, the owner agreed in a salvage contract. The salvage team made a diving inspection of the hull, which revealed several holes ranging in size from 200×80 to 100×2 mm. Hard patches were initially installed on the holes that were detected, as a result of which the water ingress stopped and then the holes were welded. The vessel berthed in Samsun on Feb 14, 2019, at 10.20 a.m. after repairs and sailed again at 4.40 p.m, bound to Giresun, ETA Feb 17.

Water ingress near Kavkaz

Wed Oct 10 13:11:55 CEST 2018 Timsen

While being moored at the outer Kerch Strait anchorage in the Azov Sea, the "Nila" suffered water ingress, possibly caused by a hull crack, in the morning of Oct 10, 2018. The ship was en route from Azov to Giresun with 3,000 tons of coal. The water ingress was brought under control, with the ship’s own dewatering pumps which kept the water level stable. Several tugs were sent to assist, The vessel lifted anchor and slowly headed to a safer anchorage near Kavkaz port.
