Allision near Cape Cod Canal

Wed Aug 14 10:09:17 CEST 2013 Timsen

The Coast Guard was responding to an allision between a tug and barge taking on water near the Cape Cod Canal on Aug 14, 2013. At 11:28 p.m. on Aug 12, watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England were notified from the crew of the "Doris Moran", homeported in Wilmington, Del., that they had reportedly lost power while towing the 410-foot barge "Alexander", and the two allided. The tug crew was able to tow the barge outside of the Canal into Buzzards Bay to an anchorage approximately two miles east of West Island. The barge was taking on approximately five-feet of water and pumps were keeping up with the water. The barge was carrying cement and was enroute to New York. There has been no reported impact to the environment. There have been no reported injuries. The Cape Cod Canal vessel traffic has not been affected. Responding were crews from the Coast Guard Station Woods Hole, Mass., New Bedford, Mass., Fire Department, the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection, the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency and the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration.
