Ferry located missing boat during SAR operation

Mon Jan 17 09:29:16 CET 2022 Timsen

In the night of Jan 15, 2022, the 'Finnstar' was involved in an SAR operation for three men with a small fishing boat on the Baltic Sea. After an engine failure, they had been drifting in the dark in their open boat for more than two hours. The MRCC Bremen was alerted via the rescue coordination center south, which the anglers called on 112. The recall to the distressed vessel provided little information because the anglers were in an area with very poor network coverage. The MRCC only received the information that the anglers were between Staberhuk and Puttgarden, a 6,5 nautical miles long stretch of coast on the island of Fehmarn. The lifeboat 'Bremen' from the Großebrode station was tasked to assist, and numerous other ships in the area were asked to keep a sharp lookout. Finally, one of the three anglers managed to send his brother two positions via a messenger service. Both specified positions were then extensively but unsuccessfully searched. At around 7 p.m., the 'Finnstar' reported a radar echo 7,5 nautical miles east of the island of Fehmarn, which could possibly be a small vessel. The 'Bremen' needed about 30 minutes to reach the specified position where it found the missing boat. After the engine failure, it had drifted further and further away from the coast. The three anglers, however, were fine. After a nearly three hours towing, the 'Bremen' reached Burgstaaken on Fehmarn shortly before 11 p.m. with the 5,20 meter-boat. The anglers and their boat survived the accident unscathed. During the night there was good visibility with southwesterly winds of three to four Beaufort. The air temperature was three degrees. Release of dangerous goods in Luebeck

Tue Mar 20 09:12:04 CET 2012 Timsen

On Mar 17, 2012, at 10 p.m. a hazardous fluids were released while unloading a tank container with 25 tons of flammable liquid from the "Finnstar" at the Skandianvien Quay in Luebeck-Travemuende. Three persons were taken to the University Hospital of Luebeckas a precaution. The accident was caused by a leaking valve on the bottom if the container. Three dock workers who had been working with the container complained of nausea after having inhaled the gases. The fire department was called and pulled the container into a special containment for dangerous goods where the leakage could be stopped. The three dock workers meanwhile were released from hospital. The water police launched an investigation.
