Bulkcarrier moored off Samarinda after grounding incident

Fri Jun 05 09:14:36 CEST 2020 Timsen

The Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines (IRISL) issued a brief statement confirming that the container ship 'Shahraz' has grounded in the waters north of Indonesia near Sambu Island but denied that there had been a collision with the Indonesia-flagged bulk carrier 'Samudra Sakti I' which also had grounded in the area on May 12. The container ship, while crossing the Strait of Singapore, got stuck due to technical problems. The situation was now under control and the necessary measures were being taken to prevent possible environmental pollution and to make the ship getting floated again, the IRISL stated andalso said that loss of the ship was covered under credited international insurances. Units of Singapore Salvage Engineers including the crane barge 'SSE Jerome' were moored alongside the vessel on June 3. At the time of the incident, the 'Shahraz' was sailing from Port Klang to Shanghai, while the 'Samudra Sakti I' was bound from Belawan to Bayah. After the bulkcarrier was successfully refloated, it was moved to an anchorage where an inspection was ongoing. It was moored on Samarinda Anchorage in pos. 01° 6.11' S 117° 13.16' E on June 3 at 2 a.m.

Two ships aground in Batam

Mon May 11 13:06:32 CEST 2020 Timsen

The container ship 'Sharaz' and the 'Samudra Sakti' were in collision and ran aground in the Strait of Singapore in Batu Batu Waters near Sambu Island, Batam, Riau Islands, on May 11, 2020, around 2 a.m. Just minutes earlier, Singapore’s port operations control centre had informed both ships that there was a risk of grounding, but the warning apparently went unheard. The ships had altered their courses to avoid a tug when the grounding happened. The Directorate General of Sea Transportation and the Ministry of Transportation, mobilized two patrol boats, the KN 'Kalimashada - P 115' and KN 'P 112 - Sarotama' to the scene after being notified by the Batam VTS, which arrived at 04.45 a.m. They also coordinated with the VTS Batam, KSOP Tanjung Balai Karimun and Batam Special KSOP. They were joined by the 'RB 209 - Tanjungpinang', 'RIB 03 - Batam', 'KN. Kalimasada', 'KN. Sarotama', 'KNP 366', 'KNP 376', 'KNP 330' and 'Palmedis'. The 'Sharaz' had sailed from Port Klang on May 10 at 8.50 a.m. bound to Yangshan. She got stuck with a list of 4° to portside near the Batu Stop beacon in position 01°11'25"N-103°52'854"E. The 'Samudra Sakti' was stuck in position 01°11'097 "N-103°52'905"E. She had sailed from Belawan on May 9 at 11.40 a.m. and was bound to Bayah, ETA May 14. The 'Samudra Sakti I' was refloated on May 11 at 4 p.m. and taken to the Batam Anchorage where she was moored. The containership remained aground, visibly dentead amidships where she was struck by the bulkcarrier. The hull showed vertical cracks on both sides throughout the freeboard and below the waterline.
