Former longliner used for drug trafficing
The "Gure Leire" was converted from fishing of anchovy and swordfishto traffic of cocaine on a large scale. The Galician José Luis Ouviña Crujeiras was in command of the vessel when it was captured in the North Atlantic by the Customs Surveillance Service with 2,500 kilos of cocaine on board that had just been transferred from a mother ship which had brought the drugs from South America to the Azores. Along with the skipper, another six people were detained aboard the patrol boat "Fulmar de Aduanas" and taken to the port of Vigo on June 3, 2019. Ouviña Crujeiras settled down years ago in the Basque Country and has been the owner of several longliners. He has been accumulating disciplinary proceedings and fines for alleged fishing irregularities that led him to leave the Ondárroa brotherhood, of which he was a member for a while.
