The ÄHarry L. Martin' was deactivated and removed from the US Navy list on Dec 30, 2021. The ship was subseuqently sold for scrapping to the All Star Metals of Brownsville, Texas, in August 2022. The ship arrived in Brownsville on Sep 27, 2022, and was subsequently broken up.

Mathews Bridge repairs to last over one month, cost nearly $3 million in total

Wed Oct 02 09:05:58 CEST 2013 arnekiel

The Florida Department of Transportation hopes to have the Mathews Bridge back up and running within the month. FDOT Secretary Ananth Prasad outlined the newly defined timeframe and cost today. He says three contractors have submitted bids to repair the bridge, which currently has “no load bearing capacity” because of damage done when a ship was towed in to the main span. The apparent low bid at this time is a 40 day contract which costs $1.07 million. If the repairs are done in 30 days, there is a $50,000/day bonus available for the remaining ten days of the contract. Prasad says it will take at least two weeks just to do preliminary maintenance that will allow the construction crews and vehicles on to the bridge. Additional costs associated with the repairs include $500,000 for traffic pattern construction and $800,000 in inspections. Prasad says they aim to recover all these costs, totaling around $2.87 million, from the insurer responsible for the vessel Harry L. Martin.

Allision damage at the Mathew Bridge as severe as it could get without a bridge collapse

Sat Sep 28 09:23:44 CEST 2013 Timsen

The Florida Department of Transportation found damage at the Mathew Bridge as severe as it could get without a bridge collapse. The Mathews Bridge, which averages 56,000 motorists a day, shut down indefinitely on Sep 26 afternoon after the "Harry L. Martin" slammed into it. Since then the state has been conducting a damage assessment on the bridge. It was estimated repairs would cost somewhere in the millions, but probably less than $10 Million and may have been done within a month. ransportation engineers and inspectors worked much of Sep 26 night into early Sep 27 examining the bridge until forced to quit by darkness. When they resumed the inspection the next morning, they were joined by a team of bridge climbers looking at the structure from top to bottom. The state was going to get an emergency contract as soon as the assessment was done and a plan was developed to repair it. The damage is all at the high point of the bridge over the middle of the St. Johns River. A beam is so badly damaged that it will have to be replaced which was going to be a very challenging repair to make. Temporary repairs will come first so that service vehicles can go to the top of the bridge. Those repairs will likely be handled from boats.
