Armed Forces of Malta instructed offshore ship not to rescue distressed migrants

Mon Feb 14 11:41:42 CET 2022 Timsen

The NGO Alarm Phone has claimed that the Armed Forces of Malta instructed the 'Havila Borg' not to rescue 88 migrants, including 27 minors and a baby, who were in distress in Malta’s SAR zone. The overcrowded boat ohad escaped from Libya but its engine had broken down. The NGO informed the 'Havila Borg' which was in the vicinity of the boat, fearing that a pushback to Tunisia or Libya was possible. Nine hours after its first alarm, the migrants were still in distress. Malta’s Armed Forces has ordered the 'Havila Borg' that was 12 anutical miles away to not intervene. The migrants were rescued on Feb 13 by the 'Ocean Viking'.
